MCSA Windows Server 2008 Overview

The MCSA Windows Server 2008 certification is perfect for people looking at getting their first job in IT. This MCSA certification provides you with a minimum set of skills needed to configure and maintain Windows Server 2008 technologies in a real world environment. In acquiring this MCSA certification, you will be qualified enough to step into most junior to intermediate system administrator roles and hit the ground running.

What are the requirements to gain MCSA Windows Server 2008?

The MCSA Windows Server 2008 certification is awarded when you pass 3 exams.

Exam 70-640

Exam 70-642

Exam 70-646

You may notice that the requirements to gain this certification are identical to those of the MCITP Server Administrator certification. If you already hold a MCITP Server Administrator certification or MCITP Enterprise Administrator certification, you will automatically be awarded with a MCSA Windows Server 2008 certification. Check your Microsoft Transcript for more information.

What is the Best Study Material for MCSA Windows Server 2008?

The exam requirements for the MCSA Windows Server 2008 certification are exactly the same as its MCITP predecessor so luckily there is a large number of study books, training videos and practice tests already available to you. Generally the best way to study for any Microsoft certification exam is to begin with the official Microsoft Self-Paced Training Kit and these exams are no exception.

Just as we got comfortable with the current MCITP certification paths that were introduced with the Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista certifications, Microsoft has decided to do away with it for future technologies as we move closer to cloud computing. The change from the MCITP certification to the New MCSE Certification comes as Microsoft introduces new ”Cloud-Built Certifications” The new certification path is based on a 3 tier design with levels being Associate, Expert and Master. The current MCITP certifications are based on a “flat” scheme as such which fails to correctly indicate actual skill level of the candidate.

What is changed in the new certifications?

One of the changes is that new certifications are level based. For example, you first need to first be at the MCSA certification level as a prerequisite to gaining a MCSE certification and so on for the MCSM certification.

Second, the new certifications do expire – you need to renew them every couple of years to refresh your knowledge and skill set with the latest technologies to keep them vaild.

The new certifications are made to be much broader and more in depth compared to the current MCITP certifications. This will help clearly identify skill levels of different people.

Forget what you know about MCSA and MCSE

Microsoft has decided to re-invent these certifications with a whole different meaning. These no longer relate to Windows Server System Administrator and System Engineer certifications, but rather each a level on the new certification pyramid.

New meanings of MCSA and MCSE:

MCSA: Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate
MCSE: Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert

In addition to these, there are also two new MCSD and MCSM certifications which will respectively replace the MCPD and MCM certification tracks.

MCSD: Microsoft Certified Solutions Developer
MCSM: Microsoft Certified Solutions Master

How does this effect my MCITP certification?

Your MCITP certification will still continue to be valid until Microsoft’s mainstream support for the technology ceases. If you currently hold a MCITP Server Administrator or MCITP Enterprise Administrator certification you will automatically be awarded with a new MCSA Windows Server 2008 as you have already passed all required exams for this.

Becoming a Virtualization Administrator will mean you hold you a certification which will have rising demand in the future. As more and more networks are utilizing a virtualized server and application environment comes the need of skills professionals to plan, deploy and maintain high availability virtual environments. A MCITP Virtualization Administrator on Windows Server 2008 R2 has all the skills required for the aforementioned and holds a certification which will ensure they have an in demand job in the years to come. To gain MCITP:VA status you will need to pass three exams.

MCITP Virtualization Administrator required exams:

Exam 70-659 TS: Server Virtualization

Exam 70-669 TS: Desktop Virtualization

Exam 70-693 PRO: Virtualization Administrator, Windows Server 2008 R2

Study material for for Windows Server 2008 R2 virtualization exams is quite sparse as the technology is rather new and the MCITP certification is less mainstream when compared to others. Fortnately there are a number of free Virtualization Jump Start Training Video’s available on technet and virtualization administrator training videos are also available from CBTPlanet.com. These study guides although not specific to the MCITP Virtualization Administrator certification will also help with your study for the certification exams.

Although there is no official date as of yet for the realease of Windows 8 exams, but if they follow a similar release date as the Windows 7 exams did, the Windows 8 Beta exams will be released a few of months prior to the Windows 8 RTM release and the mainstream exams will be available in the month leading up.

As Windows 8 has been designed for touch screenfeatures a new “metro-style interface” which is basically a series of tiles on multiple desktops similar to what you might already be familiar to on smartphones and tablet devices.

Windows 8 Beta exams will be available to select people who pre-register and will have the exam number denomination 71-xxx rather than 70-xxx. Windows 8 MCTS beta exams will be announced on the Beta Exams Annoucement blog on technet

The Windows 8 Consumer preview is available for download so you are able to have a quick play with the new styled operating system.

From the outset, selecting one of the best MCITP books available will ensure your study will get off on the right foot and be the most efficient and time effective. There are a large number of MCITP books on offer from a number of different professional technical authors from within the IT industry with the price averaging at about USD $40 each. To answer the question of “What is the best MCITP study book?” we spent hours reading book reviews and peoples own personal experiences on numerous MCITP certification forums and the answer of the best MCITP book was very clear.
