Hi there,

No it is not essential to attend classes at a training centre. I have personally self-studied for all of my Microsoft certifications and gained pass marks in all first try. If don't have any time pressure to gain your MCITP certfication, self-study is going to be fine as long as you read and understand the Microsoft training kit book and work through all of the labs. It would also be advantageous to use some video study such as TestOut or CBT Nuggets to recap over all of the exam topics after working your way through the training kit.
